Delhi Police constable Sonika Yadav has claimed a bronze medal at the All India Police Weightlifting Cluster 2025-26 competition held in Andhra Pradesh, while being seven months pregnant.
The remarkable achievement saw Yadav successfully complete lifts of 125 kg in squats, 80 kg in bench press, and an impressive 145 kg in deadlift, despite being in her third trimester.
Event footage shows Yadav carefully adjusting her specialized belly belt before executing her lifts with determination and proper form.
Following her medal-winning performance, Yadav shared with NDTV that her first thought was of her eight-year-old son, who has consistently encouraged her with the words, "Mummy, you do it... I am proud of you."
Currently assigned to the Community Policing Cell in North Delhi, Yadav had been training for nearly a year for this competition. When she discovered her pregnancy during her preparation period, she made the bold decision to continue pursuing her weightlifting goals.
Her husband provided crucial support, encouraging her participation not for medal aspirations but for the valuable experience. Throughout her training, Yadav maintained close supervision from both her coach and physician, ensuring each lift remained within safe medical parameters. Her health and the baby's development were monitored weekly to maintain safety.
Reflecting on her journey, Yadav stated that when someone is truly determined, even challenging circumstances cannot prevent achievement. "The struggle is hard, but strong willpower helps achieve the goal," she emphasized.
Yadav expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from both her family and the Delhi Police department. While they initially expressed concern about her health and the baby's wellbeing, she was able to reassure them with medical reports and her passionate dedication.
Her motivation extended beyond medal recognition, focusing instead on maintaining her passion for weightlifting. With the bronze medal now secured, Yadav has already set her sights on upgrading the color of her medal in next year's competition.
A constable from the 2014 batch, Yadav's service record includes a notable posting as a beat officer in Majnu Ka Tila, where she earned recognition for her anti-drug initiatives. Her professional accomplishments include a 2022 felicitation by the Delhi Police Commissioner, and acknowledgment from former Union Minister Smriti Irani during International Women's Day celebrations.
