Rudrapur:
Police apprehended a 20-year-old suspect on Wednesday for allegedly sexually assaulting and brutally murdering a teenage girl using a sharp blade in Uttarakhand's Udham Singh Nagar district.
The perpetrator, identified as Rajiv Kumar (20), was captured within 12 hours following the incident that occurred in Amiyawala village in the Jaspur area, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manikant Mishra of Udham Singh Nagar.
Authorities recovered the blood-stained weapon used in the crime along with the clothing worn by the suspect during the attack, based on information provided by the accused, Mishra stated.
According to Mishra, the victim, an eighth-grade student, had ventured to the field on Tuesday evening to gather sugarcane peels for her animals when Rajiv followed her.
The suspect allegedly assaulted her sexually and, when she resisted, committed acts of extreme violence.
He reportedly twisted and broke her arm, strangled her until unconscious, and then repeatedly stabbed her in the face and abdomen with a sharp blade, leaving her bleeding profusely.
The SSP reported that when the girl failed to return home after an extended period, her family began searching and discovered her lying in a pool of blood in a sugarcane field approximately 150 meters from their residence.
Villagers alerted law enforcement about the incident and rushed the victim to Jaspur Community Health Centre, where medical professionals pronounced her deceased.
Outraged by the crime, local residents created a disturbance and blocked National Highway 74, demanding the immediate capture of the perpetrator.
Additional police forces were summoned from neighboring stations to manage the deteriorating situation caused by the large gathering of villagers at the scene.
After considerable effort, authorities convinced the protesters to allow the reopening of the highway and restoration of traffic flow.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim's mother, authorities registered a case under Sections 103(1) (punishment for murder) and 64(1) (punishment for rape) of the BNS and the POCSO Act, and initiated legal proceedings.
The SSP revealed that 10 specialized teams were formed to solve the case. Investigators also employed a sniffer dog, which tracked from the crime scene to the victim's residence and subsequently to the suspect's home.
Intensive interrogation by police led to the suspect's confession. Initially, the accused attempted to mislead the investigation, according to the SSP.
