Kolkata Doctor Found Dead: Investigation Into Mysterious Death at RG Kar Medical College

The police have initiated an investigation into the unexplained death, registering it as an unnatural death case.

Kolkata authorities reported on Monday that a physician at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has passed away under puzzling circumstances.

The event occurred on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Subhajit Acharya, 37, who resided in Madhyamgram within the North 24 Parganas district.

Police sources indicated that his family members stated he was emotionally distressed due to workplace pressures at the government hospital, though they have not yet filed any official complaint regarding Acharya's death.

Nevertheless, law enforcement has documented the case as an unnatural death and begun investigating the circumstances.

According to police statements, Acharya's spouse, Aindrila Roy, who serves as a medical officer at Basirhat District Hospital, informed them that he appeared normal on Sunday.

Around 10 p.m., they shared dinner together in their Madhyamgram apartment. Subsequently, at approximately midnight, Acharya informed his wife about feeling unwell and needing immediate medical attention. He was promptly transported to a private medical facility, where physicians pronounced him deceased. His wife revealed to investigators that her husband had consumed slightly excessive medication that evening. Additionally, he experienced significant workplace stress at the hospital, was under considerable pressure, and struggled with depression.

The doctor's remains have been transferred to Barasat Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police sources indicated that the definitive cause of death will be determined only after this procedure is completed.

"We've registered this as an unnatural death case. The investigation has commenced, and we are exploring all potential scenarios," stated a high-ranking officer from the North 24 Parganas district police department.

On August 9 of the previous year, the body of a post-graduate trainee was discovered in the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This incident sparked nationwide outrage and beyond, triggering extensive ongoing protest movements among medical professionals, ordinary citizens, and female household members. The convicted individual, Sanjoy Roy, has already received a life imprisonment sentence from a trial court; however, even after a year, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not completed its inquiry into the "larger conspiracy" behind this crime.
