Is This Gandhiji? Controversial 'Abstract' Statue in Kerala Sparks Uproar

The Gandhi statue unveiled by Guruvayoor Municipality has shocked local residents

A newly revealed Mahatma Gandhi statue in Kerala has triggered widespread controversy and discussion, as locals claim it bears little resemblance to India's most venerated freedom struggle icon.

The controversial statue was unveiled at Bio Park in Guruvayur Municipality, a suburban area of Thrissur city, on Sunday.

The peculiar figure, which observers note resembles Gandhiji only through its glasses and walking stick, has left community members confused and concerned.

Many visitors began questioning whether this sculpture truly honors the Father of the Nation appropriately.

Construction of the statue had been underway for several days at the Bio Park location.

However, when the statue was finally revealed, attendees at the ceremony looked on in astonishment.

"Is this Gandhi Ji?" numerous onlookers asked, visibly surprised by the unusual representation.

Despite growing criticism, Guruvayur Municipality Chairman M Krishnadas and IAS officer Divya S Iyer proceeded with the statue's inauguration.

Opposition groups have accused the municipal authority of disrespecting Gandhiji, while heated discussions have erupted across social media platforms.

Reports indicate the sculptor defended his artistic creation, stating he had incorporated Gandhian principles into the design concept.

Municipal officials supported the artist, explaining that the statue represents an abstract interpretation and would eventually be completed to more accurately depict the national leader.

Chairman Krishnadas rejected accusations that the statue was intended to be disrespectful.

Meanwhile, KSU Thrissur District President Gokul has submitted a formal complaint to the Guruvayur District Collector, requesting firm action against the LDF-led municipality for what he describes as an insult to Mahatma Gandhi.

Gokul specifically mentioned that the current sculpture resembles a "tree-shaped" figure rather than the revered national leader.
