Thiruvananthapuram:
Several districts across Kerala experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds on Monday, resulting in waterlogging in low-lying areas, according to officials.
In Alappuzha district, a tragic incident occurred when a fisherman lost his life after his boat capsized near the Arthunkal coast due to strong winds.
The deceased was identified as Paul Devasia, an Arthunkal native.
Police reported that he had ventured out for fishing early in the morning, and despite being rescued by fellow fishermen, he subsequently passed away.
Another fatality was reported when a West Bengal native died after being struck by lightning at Mukanoor near Angamaly.
Police identified the victim as Kokhan Misthri (45), who worked at a workshop and was struck by lightning at approximately 8:15 am while at his rented accommodation in Mukanoor.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for five districts - Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Kannur, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta - indicating potential rainfall measuring between 115.6 mm and 204 mm over the next 24 hours.
Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Alappuzha districts, where rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is anticipated.
The meteorological department also cautioned about strong winds affecting all districts throughout Kerala.
Officials reported that northern districts have been experiencing heavy rainfall since early morning, causing waterlogging in parts of Kozhikode city, with water entering numerous shops near the KSRTC bus station.
Heavy rainfall was also reported in the high-range areas of Malappuram and Kannur, while coastal regions faced strong winds.
According to authorities, the rain intensified in central Kerala districts, including Ernakulam and Alappuzha, during the morning hours.
The heavy rainfall resulted in damage to a section of the Aluva-Munnar road near Perumbavoor, necessitating traffic regulations in the area.
The IMD has forecast continued intense rainfall on Tuesday.
Given the adverse weather conditions, fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea.
