On Camera, Tourist Rescues Man From Being Swept Away In Karnataka Dam

A tourist became a hero when he rescued a man who was being swept away by powerful currents at Karnataka's Vani Vilas Sagar dam on Sunday. The dramatic rescue was captured on video as crowds had gathered to witness the spectacle of overflowing waters after authorities opened the reservoir's crest gate in Chitradurga. During the commotion, one man lost his footing near the edge and was quickly carried away by the forceful waters.

Acting quickly, a tourist at the scene jumped into the water, challenging the strong current to save the struggling man.

The footage shows the young man being carried away by the water as onlookers cried out for assistance.

Another video clip captures the brave tourist helping the man grasp a rope extended from the shore, while signaling to others to help pull them both to safety.

Vani Vilas Sagar reservoir, also known locally as "VV Sagar" or "Mari Kanive," is situated across the Vedavathi River near Marikanive village in Hiriyur Taluk of Chitradurga District, Karnataka. Built between 1897 and 1907 during the reign of the Mysuru kingdom, it holds the distinction of being Karnataka's oldest dam.

The reservoir recently approached its full capacity of 129.4 feet once again. An eco-tourism and adventure sports initiative is currently in development. The backwaters and surrounding areas are being transformed for recreational activities such as boating, windsurfing, and kayaking.

Earlier this month, a tragic incident occurred when seven people were swept away by strong currents downstream of the Markonahalli Dam in Karnataka's Tumakuru district during a picnic. Police reports indicate that approximately 15 people had visited the dam when seven of them, including women and children, entered the water. The siphon system unexpectedly released water, creating a strong current that pulled them away.

One individual was rescued and hospitalized. Two bodies have been recovered, while four others remain missing. Officials attributed the incident to a sudden natural increase in water flow.
