CBI Confirms Sushant Singh Rajput's Expenses on Rhea Chakraborty Were Voluntary: No Evidence of Fraud Found

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput and Rhea Chakraborty shared a relationship where financial expenditures were made willingly, according to CBI findings.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has revealed that late actor Sushant Singh Rajput voluntarily spent approximately ₹16.80 lakh on his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty during their live-in relationship, dismissing allegations of fund embezzlement or fraud.

Sushant, who tragically died by suicide in 2020, lived with Rhea from April 2018 until June 2020. The CBI report clarified that it was at Sushant's own request that his manager Shruti Modi arranged tickets for their European vacation in October 2019.

These details emerged in the CBI's closure report addressing allegations made by Sushant's family that Rhea had mentally harassed him and misappropriated around ₹15 crore of his assets.

The Bombay High Court has since ordered the anti-drug agency to return Rhea Chakraborty's passport, providing significant relief to the actress.

Sushant, aged 34, was discovered deceased at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020—an incident that sparked widespread controversy and eventually led to the CBI taking over the investigation. His postmortem report indicated asphyxia as the cause of death. Initially, the Bihar Police were investigating the case and had filed an abetment to suicide case based on a complaint from the actor's father in Patna.

According to the investigative agency, Sushant spent money on Rhea willingly, and no evidence suggested that his funds were forcibly or illegally taken. The expenditures during their relationship are therefore considered normal relationship expenses.

In an interview, Rhea mentioned to NDTV that her family was never the same carefree unit after receiving the CBI's clean chit in Sushant's case.

The CBI report further stated that neither Rhea nor her brother Showik were present at Sushant's residence from June 8, 2020, until his death, and they did not return to the apartment afterward.

Investigations revealed that while Sushant communicated with Showik via WhatsApp on June 10, he did not speak with Rhea that day.

"When departing Sushant's apartment with her brother on June 8, Rhea took her Apple laptop and the Apple wristwatch Sushant had given her," the report noted.

"The investigation found no evidence of any items being removed from Sushant's property without his knowledge," it continued.

The report mentioned that Sushant's sister Meetu Singh stayed with him from June 8 to 12.

Rhea's lawyer has maintained that Sushant's death was a "pure case of suicide."

The CBI reported that Shruti Modi stopped visiting Sushant's residence in February 2020 after sustaining a leg fracture. "Sushant informed Siddharth Pithani (his roommate) that Rhea was part of the family. Therefore, expenses incurred on Rhea cannot constitute cheating under Section 420 of the IPC. No movable property was given to Rhea," stated the report.

Additionally, no evidence was found indicating that Rhea or her family threatened or coerced Sushant into taking his own life.

In response to the report, Sushant's family lawyer Varun Singh claimed the agency failed to thoroughly examine the mental pressure allegedly exerted by Rhea on the actor. He asserted that Rhea had a mental and emotional impact that worsened Sushant's condition.

In March this year, the CBI filed a closure report in Patna exonerating everyone named in the two FIRs, including Rhea, her parents, and brother.

Following the verdict, Rhea expressed: "When I received a clean chit... You can't feel happy because fundamentally you know someone close to you is gone. But I felt relief for my parents, thinking they could now move more freely in society..."

In his complaint to Bihar Police, Sushant's father had alleged that Rhea and her family members misappropriated his son's money—accusations Rhea has repeatedly denied.
