Woman Threatens Air India Passenger for Not Speaking Marathi: Language Discrimination Incident Goes Viral

A video posted by content creator Mahi Khan captured a disturbing incident where a female passenger confronted him on Air India flight AI676 for not speaking Marathi.

During the Kolkata-Mumbai journey, the unidentified woman, wearing a Hyundai-branded shirt, insisted that Khan should speak Marathi because he was traveling to Mumbai. When he explained that he didn't know the language, she responded with "No English."

The situation escalated when the woman threatened Khan saying, "Mumbai utariye aapko badtameezi dikhati hu," which translates to "When you get off in Mumbai, I'll show you what misbehaviour is."

Khan documented the confrontation, stating, "What kind of misbehavior is this? She is telling me to speak Marathi. What is this?" He further expressed his concern about the incident occurring on an Air India flight.

In his Instagram post, Khan wrote, "Speak Marathi or leave Mumbai. That's what this lady told me on my Air India flight AI676 today, before threatening me for saying 'I don't understand Marathi.' Yes, this happened in 2025, in a country that proudly says 'Unity in Diversity.'"

He elaborated, "She was sitting in seat 16A and started shouting that I must speak in Marathi because I'm flying to Mumbai. You cannot force someone to speak a language. You cannot bully someone out of respect."

Khan called on Air India to take strict action, emphasizing that "No passenger should feel unsafe or humiliated for simply speaking a different language."

The incident has sparked reactions online, with some social media users tagging Hyundai India, demanding a public apology and citing concerns about brand integrity.

This event follows a similar incident on a Mumbai local train where a woman told another passenger to either learn Marathi or "get out," saying, "If you want to stay in our Mumbai, speak Marathi; otherwise, get out."
