A tragic incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur where a 25-year-old motorcyclist lost his life due to a throat injury caused by 'Chinese manjha' on the Sitapur highway, police reported on Thursday.
The victim, Ravi Kumar Sharma, was traveling to his in-laws' residence for Bhai Dooj celebrations in Mohammadi accompanied by his wife who was riding pillion when the incident happened.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi, Sharma was immediately transported to the Government Medical College where medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival. The deceased was a resident of Nagla Jaju village within the Katra Police Station jurisdiction.
Authorities confirmed this was not an isolated incident in the district. Earlier in January, a police constable suffered a fatal neck injury from the glass-coated Chinese manjha near Azizganj.
Following that fatality, law enforcement initiated a campaign against the sale of this already prohibited kite string.
In July, district police confiscated over 300 bundles of Chinese manjha and detained numerous merchants, an enforcement action that created division within the local traders' association.
