Massive Fire Engulfs Mumbai's 13-Storey Commercial Building: 17 Suffer Suffocation, 27 Rescued

Flames rapidly spread across multiple floors of the glass-facade commercial structure.

A total of 17 individuals experienced suffocation following a fire outbreak in a 13-storey commercial building located in Mumbai's Jogeshwari area on Thursday morning, according to officials.

Nine affected individuals complaining of suffocation are currently receiving treatment at the nearby HBT Hospital run by the civic authorities, a civic official reported. The remaining eight people chose to leave against medical advice.

Dense black smoke engulfed the glass facade after the fire erupted at JNS Business Center near Gandhi School at approximately 10:50 am.

The official confirmed that emergency responders have contained the fire from all directions, and extinguishing operations were continuing.

The flames advanced from the 9th to 13th floor of the glass-facade structure. Additionally, the fire spread between the 4th and 13th floors through the electrical duct system.

A fire brigade representative stated that at least 12 fire engines along with additional firefighting equipment had been deployed to combat the blaze. Fire brigade personnel successfully rescued 27 individuals, including two women, from various floors by utilizing both staircases and hydraulic platform ladders.

The official noted that the fire primarily affected electric wiring and installations, false ceilings, doors, windows, electrical and air conditioning ducts, and furniture.

Smoke accumulated in offices between the 11th and 13th floors, prompting fire brigade personnel to break portions of the glass facade to improve ventilation.
