Tragic Death at Latur College: 6 Arrested After Fatal Assault During Freshers Party

The victim was attacked with fists and sticks during what began as a minor dispute at the event.

A tragic incident at a private college in Maharashtra's Latur district has resulted in the death of a student who was allegedly assaulted during a freshers' party, with authorities subsequently arresting six individuals in connection with the crime.

According to police statements released Wednesday, the fatal assault took place on October 8 during a freshers' party organized at a prominent educational institution located in the MIDC area of Latur.

What started as a small disagreement while dancing quickly escalated into violence when the victim, identified as Suraj Shinde, became involved in an argument with several fellow students. The confrontation intensified when the group, in a moment of anger, reportedly attacked Shinde using sticks and fists.

Shinde suffered severe injuries from the attack and was immediately transported to a hospital nearby, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. Following the incident, law enforcement opened a murder investigation based on a statement from another student who was present. By October 16, four students had been taken into custody, according to an official report.

Two additional students were arrested on Tuesday (October 21) after investigators discovered their involvement in the assault, bringing the total number of arrests to six, police confirmed.

All six individuals face charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, inflicting grievous harm using dangerous weapons or methods, criminal intimidation, and deliberately insulting with intent to provoke breach of peace, among other offenses.

Police Sub-Inspector Suresh Pogulwar is currently leading the investigation into this case.
