Guwahati:
Train services faced significant disruption for several hours between Kokrajhar and Salakati in Assam early Thursday morning following an explosion that damaged a portion of the railway tracks, according to officials. The blast, occurring shortly after midnight, is believed to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), sources indicated. The explosion created a small crater on the tracks and halted train movement for an extended period.
Security forces and railway engineering teams promptly arrived at the location after the explosion. As a precautionary measure, all train services were temporarily suspended while repair operations and thorough inspections were conducted.
Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) stated: "At about 1.00 am on 23.10.2025, when the goods train UP AZARA Sugar was passing between Salakati and Kokrajhar, the train manager reported a heavy jerk, after which the train was stopped. On checking, it was found that there was damage on the track and sleepers due to a suspected bomb blast."
State and railway police authorities, along with intelligence agencies, are currently investigating the incident.
Officials confirmed that the affected stretch has now been reopened for normal train operations.
The NFR announced in a statement: "Track has been restored at 5.25 am and normal train running has resumed. Around eight trains underwent detention due to the incident. Patrolling has been intensified in the section."
