Thiruvananthapuram:
Shashi Tharoor, the four-term Congress parliamentarian representing Thiruvananthapuram, extended birthday greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, a gesture that might attract scrutiny within his party given his previous complimentary remarks about the PM had triggered discontent among fellow Congress members.
Taking to X, Tharoor posted: "Wishing Prime Minister @narendramodi a very happy birthday. May the year ahead be filled with good health, happiness, and continued success in the service of the nation."
The wishes coincided with PM Modi's 75th birthday, which garnered congratulatory messages from leaders across political divides.
Earlier this year, Tharoor had characterized PM Modi as "undoubtedly the most dominant political figure in the country," noting that his appeal remained strong among substantial portions of the electorate.
This statement had prompted criticism from certain Congress factions, with several leaders questioning both the timing and political implications of such remarks.
Tharoor subsequently clarified that recognizing political realities should not be confused with endorsing government policies, emphasizing that civility on a personal level should be maintained despite political disagreements. Tharoor created friction within his party after accepting the Central government's nomination to head an all-party parliamentary delegation to the United States and several other nations as part of the Operation Sindoor diplomatic initiative following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Despite his party not nominating him, he proceeded with the mission.
His comments regarding PM Modi continue to draw attention both within and outside his party, highlighting the sensitivities surrounding political messaging ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
The Prime Minister's birthday was celebrated throughout the country, with BJP organizing various welfare initiatives, health camps, and public engagement programs.
Earlier in the day, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also extended his wishes despite significant ideological differences. In his message on X, the Chief Minister wrote: "Warm birthday wishes to Hon'ble PM @narendramodi. Wishing you good health and happiness."
