Chennai:

A mother and daughter lost their lives this morning when a neighboring house's wall collapsed onto their hut following heavy overnight rainfall in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district. These deaths mark the first rain-related casualties in the state as the northeast monsoon season intensifies.

The deceased have been identified as Yasodha and her daughter Jaya, who resided in Kamarajar Street in Andarmullipallam, near Chidambaram. According to police reports, the two women had just completed their breakfast and were inside their thatched dwelling when the adjacent tiled-roof structure's wall gave way, crashing onto their home.

Upon hearing the loud crash, nearby residents quickly gathered at the scene and attempted to rescue the women, but unfortunately, both had already succumbed to their injuries. "We are conducting an investigation," a senior police official confirmed to NDTV when verifying the fatalities.

Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister MRK Panneerselvam visited the location, offered condolences to the bereaved family, and supervised arrangements for transporting the bodies for post-mortem examination.

Cuddalore district experienced up to 174 mm of rainfall within a 21-hour period ending at 5:30 am today, causing flooding in lower-elevation areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously predicted extremely heavy rainfall for Cuddalore and neighboring districts including Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, and Chengalpattu, as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The IMD has now reported that the well-marked low-pressure system is not expected to develop into a depression as earlier anticipated, providing temporary relief despite ongoing heavy precipitation across coastal Tamil Nadu.
