In Mumbai, nine transgender individuals reportedly attempted suicide following derogatory remarks directed at their spiritual leader, Salma Khan, and the organization Kinnar Maa Sansthan.
The incident occurred at the first-floor office of Kinnar Maa Sansthan, a Mumbai-based non-profit dedicated to supporting transgender and Hijra communities throughout India. According to police officials, the individuals were deeply hurt by disparaging comments made against their spiritual guide.
All nine individuals were promptly transported to a hospital where they received medical treatment. Officials confirmed they have since been discharged and are no longer in danger.
This troubling event follows just one week after another incident in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where 25 transgender persons allegedly consumed phenyl. Dr. Basant Kumar Ningwal, Superintendent-in-Charge of the government-operated Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MYH), stated to PTI news agency that while the individuals claimed to have consumed phenyl collectively, immediate confirmation was not possible.
Law enforcement officials suggested that the incident might be connected to an ongoing dispute between two local transgender community groups.
