A 19-year-old man was arrested after his motorcycle collided with a 68-year-old woman when he attempted to bypass a traffic signal in Thrissur, Kerala, last week.
The incident occurred near Puthukad on National Highway 544 at 8am on Saturday. CCTV footage shows the accused, later identified as Emmanuel, striking the victim, Selin, with his bike while ignoring the signal as she was crossing the road.
After the woman fell to the ground, Emmanuel fled the scene. Bystanders quickly gathered to assist the injured woman.
Sources indicate that the victim sustained a head injury and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital.
Following the incident, police initiated an investigation and reviewed approximately 50 CCTV recordings to identify the suspect. They spotted the motorcycle passing through the Puthukkad signal but not continuing through the Paliyekkara toll plaza.
Video footage from a bus proved crucial in solving the case, as it captured the motorcycle's license plate number. Investigators traced the vehicle to Emmanuel, who had turned toward Kelipadam after the traffic signal.
Authorities arrested the suspect on Monday. Further investigation revealed that Emmanuel is a nursing student in Bengaluru who was on leave, working at a coffee shop in Puthukad. The accident occurred while he was returning home after completing a night shift.
A team led by Station House Officer Adam Khan and Sub-Inspector N. Pradeep conducted the arrest.
