Cyclone Alert: IMD Warns of Intensifying Weather System Over Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Local port warnings have been implemented in response to the developing weather system over the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially issued a 'cyclone alert' for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands following the identification of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. According to officials on Monday, this weather system is expected to intensify beginning October 21.

In anticipation of this developing weather pattern, local port authorities have issued warnings, as the system is forecast to bring heavy rainfall that will continue through October 23.

"Heavy rainfall measuring between 7-11 cm is very likely to occur in isolated areas across the Nicobar Islands. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph and lightning are very likely to affect isolated locations throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 21, 22, and 23," stated an official from the meteorological department.

The forecast further indicates that thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and lightning will likely continue to affect isolated areas across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 24 and 25.

"Squally weather conditions with surface winds reaching speeds of 35-45 kmph and gusting up to 55 kmph are very likely over the Andaman Sea from October 22 to 23. For the upcoming five-day period, sea conditions are expected to be rough, and fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the waters around the Andaman Sea and along the Andaman and Nicobar coastline until October 24," the official added.

Due to the anticipated surge in waves, the administration has advised boat owners, local islanders, and tourists to operate their vessels with maximum caution. Recreational activities must be conducted with heightened vigilance during this period.

Both tourists and the general public have been advised to avoid entering the sea and are requested to strictly adhere to all safety guidelines issued by local administration authorities.
