Former Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur has sparked a significant controversy with her inflammatory statements at a religious gathering in Bhopal.
The controversy centers around Thakur's remarks urging parents to prevent their daughters from visiting "non-Hindu" households, even suggesting physical violence if they disobey. This statement has drawn sharp criticism from the Congress party, which accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of promoting divisive rhetoric.
During her address at a religious event earlier this month, Thakur advocated for strict parental discipline, stating, "Strengthen your mind, and make it so strong that if our daughter does not obey us, if she goes to a non-Hindu's house, leave no stone unturned in considering breaking her legs." She further emphasized that children who disobey their parents and traditional values deserve punishment.
Thakur continued with controversial advice, suggesting that parents should not hesitate to use physical measures for what she termed as their children's "well-being." She claimed such actions prevent children from being "cut into pieces," a statement that has raised significant concern.
In her speech, which was uploaded to Facebook and subsequently went viral, Thakur also urged parents to exercise heightened vigilance over daughters who "do not follow values" or "respect elders." She advocated restraining such children at home through various means ranging from physical discipline to emotional appeals.
The Congress party has responded strongly to Thakur's comments. Congress spokesperson Bhupendra Gupta questioned the necessity of "spreading noise and hatred" when only seven cases of alleged religious conversions in Madhya Pradesh have resulted in convictions.
This is not the first time Thakur has made controversial statements regarding parenting. She recently emphasized the importance of instilling discipline and "cultural upbringing" in children, further highlighting her conservative stance on family values.
