Authorities arrested two individuals, including a well-known businessman, following the discovery of liquor cans in a vehicle near a hotel in Surat, Gujarat—a state with prohibition laws. The incident occurred during a large celebration for the businessman's birthday earlier this week.
According to sources, the celebration was held at KS Avtaar Hotel in Althan on Thursday to mark businessman Sameer Shah's birthday. During the festivities, Sameer's 19-year-old son began consuming alcohol with several companions inside a vehicle parked near the venue.
When police officers arrived following a tip-off and attempted to document the alcohol consumption, the teenager exited the vehicle and became confrontational. Viral footage of the incident shows the young man physically pushing and assaulting the officers.
After police managed to subdue the teen, his father appeared at the scene attempting to defuse the situation. Sources indicate he allegedly threatened officers by claiming to have "connections at the top."
Shortly thereafter, two women reportedly arrived and pleaded with the officers to release the teenager, emphasizing that "he is a child."
According to police reports, nine alcohol cans valued at Rs 1,350, seven mobile phones, and cash were seized from the vehicle. The car, which displayed an "L" sticker indicating a learner's license, was also confiscated.
In a statement to NDTV, Zone 4 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nidhi Thakur explained: "We have filed two separate cases—one regarding the alcohol recovery from the vehicle and another concerning the assault on police officers. We have arrested the individual who supplied the liquor. Sameer was also taken into custody after the delivery person indicated he was acting under the businessman's instructions."
DCP Thakur further stated: "The businessman's son failed the breath analyzer test. We've sent his blood and urine samples for medical examination. He faces charges related to the officer assault. We are evaluating whether to issue a formal notice and if additional arrests are necessary."
The investigation continues with assistance from local authorities in Gujarat.
