Kolkata:
BJP's Darjeeling MP Raju Bista's convoy has reportedly been attacked near Jorebunglow in Darjeeling. Unknown individuals threw stones at one of the vehicles in his convoy. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. The MP has filed a complaint with local police authorities.
According to Bista, the attack occurred while he was returning from surveying flood conditions in remote areas of the hills.
"My convoy was attacked by unknown miscreants in Masdhura, near Sukhia Pokhari today. Though these cowards targeted me, the attack impacted the vehicle directly behind mine," Bista stated in a Facebook post.
"The timing of this attack, following the announcement of an Interlocutor for our region, raises suspicions and suggests a conspiracy to disrupt regional peace. If those loyal to Kolkata believe such attacks will intimidate us, they are mistaken. We remain undaunted, and these cowardly actions only strengthen our resolve," his post continued.
"I warn those attempting to disturb peace today—your malicious efforts will not succeed. We will continue working toward lasting peace in our region, and nothing can prevent this from happening," he added.
Arun Sigchi, a Member of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, commented, "Stone pelting doesn't align with hill culture. This could be coincidental."
He emphasized that such incidents shouldn't occur and don't reflect the nature of hill politics. "Peace prevails in the hills. These miscreants aren't affiliated with any political organization," Sigchi noted.
This attack on Bista, a two-term Darjeeling MP, comes shortly after BJP MP Khagen Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked in Nagrakata, North Bengal.
Disturbing mobile footage from that incident showed Murmu, who represents Bengal's Maldaha Uttar constituency, suffering severe head injuries with significant bleeding, his white scarf stained red.
Murmu and Ghosh were attacked while distributing relief supplies to flood victims. Both leaders required extended hospitalization at a private medical facility in Siliguri following the assault.
