Chennai:

A tragic incident occurred on Thursday in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district when four women lost their lives after being struck by lightning while working in a maize field.

"Our investigation indicates it was an intense lightning strike. All four women died instantly at the scene," a high-ranking police officer confirmed to NDTV.

The fatal incident took place around 2 pm as the women were applying pesticides in a field located in Kazhudur village near Veppur.

Among the victims, three were daily wage workers, while the fourth was the owner of the land. Another woman who was also injured during the incident is presently undergoing medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

Police officials have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In a similar incident last year, a 34-year-old man lost his life due to a lightning strike in Ezhudur village. Local authorities have issued warnings to residents to exercise caution during unexpected thunderstorms, especially when working in exposed field areas.
