Ten students sustained injuries when their school van plunged off a bridge in Maharashtra's Bhandara district while attempting to navigate around significant potholes on the road.
The accident occurred at Surewara in Bhandara district. The children were on their way home from school traveling on a road severely damaged with potholes. In an effort to avoid these hazardous road craters, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall from a low bridge. All the students suffered injuries and were immediately transported to the district hospital for medical attention.
Footage from the district hospital shows medical personnel examining the injured boys and girls while their concerned parents provide comfort and support.
This incident has highlighted the deteriorating condition of local infrastructure, prompting area residents to criticize the Public Works Department for what they describe as negligence in road maintenance.
Bhandara district, commonly referred to as the "district of lakes" due to its approximately 3,500 lakes (many dating back centuries), has seen locals using this nickname satirically in recent times. Residents have shared images on social media platforms showing water-filled potholes, sarcastically noting that the poor road conditions further reinforce the district's reputation for abundant water bodies.
