Patna:

Janata Dal United (JDU), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has nominated four Muslim candidates for the upcoming 2025 Bihar assembly elections, strategically managing community representation while addressing the state's complex caste dynamics.

These four Muslim nominees were included in the second list of 44 candidates announced by Bihar's governing party this morning. This represents a significant reduction from the previous election when the party fielded ten Muslim candidates. Meanwhile, the BJP has not nominated any Muslim candidates in this electoral cycle.

JDU's minority representatives will contest from Chainpur, Amaur, Jokihat, and Araria constituencies. With the exception of Chainpur, the other three seats are located in the politically crucial Seemanchal region, which is home to a substantial portion of Bihar's 17% Muslim population.

In the party's nominations, Jama Khan has been selected for Chainpur, Saba Zafar for Amous, Manzar Alam for Jokihat, and Shagupta Azim for Araria.

During the 2020 electoral contest, Chainpur was secured by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), while Congress claimed victory in Araria. Both Amour and Jokihat constituencies were won by the AIMIM.

The JDU's strategic caste calculations remain evident across its candidate selection for all 101 seats it's contesting. Following extensive deliberations and candidate assessments, the party commenced revealing its electoral strategy this week, with an initial list of 57 candidates published yesterday.

The party has allocated 37 tickets to candidates from Backward Classes and 22 each to representatives from the Extremely Backward Classes and General Category. Additionally, 15 Scheduled Caste candidates have received nominations from JDU, alongside one Scheduled Tribe representative.

The comprehensive candidate roster includes 13 women, five currently serving ministers, and three candidates with significant political influence.

Within the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seat distribution arrangement, JDU is contesting 101 of Bihar's 243 assembly seats. The BJP will also contest 101 seats, with remaining constituencies allocated among smaller coalition partners.

Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha and Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) will each contest six seats, while Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has been allocated 29 seats. Among these allies, Manjhi has announced all six of his candidates. Chirag Paswan has named 17 candidates but has yet to reveal his party's candidates for the remaining 12 seats. Kushwaha has announced four candidates, with two still pending.
