The situation in Bahraich district has become increasingly alarming after a wolf responsible for attacking more than 25 people was eliminated by Forest Department shooters in the Kaiserganj area early this morning.
According to Dr. Sammaran, Forest Conservator of Devipatan division, two of the four wolves involved in the attacks have now been neutralized. Teams are actively searching for the remaining two wolves, with one of them reportedly injured.
"We successfully neutralized a wolf that had been attacking humans at 4 am today," Dr. Sammaran explained. "Out of the four wolves identified, two have been neutralized, one is injured and currently missing, and one remains at large. We utilize thermal drone technology to track these animals. We have deployed 5 specialized teams, including those equipped with tranquilizers and nets."
Dr. Sammaran also mentioned that following the Chief Minister's visit to Bahraich on September 27th to assess the situation, orders were given to either capture or neutralize the wolves. "Our protocol is to first attempt tranquilizing and capturing the animal. Elimination is only pursued when capture attempts fail," he added.
Ram Singh Yadav, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Bahraich, reported that since September 9th, the wolf attacks in the Majhara Tokli area of Kaisarganj Tehsil have resulted in six fatalities and injuries to 25-26 people.
The crisis began when a young girl was fatally attacked in September by a wild animal presumed to be a wolf. Since then, residents of Bahraich have been living in constant fear, particularly concerned about the safety of children.
The DFO confirmed that extensive measures are being implemented to address the threat. "Forest department teams are actively working throughout the affected area. We've installed trap cameras, drone cameras, and nets to capture the wolves. However, the animals are constantly changing their locations and taking advantage of the cover provided by sugarcane and paddy fields, which makes capture operations particularly challenging," he explained.
