Dual Police Suicides in Haryana: IPS Officer's Wife Faces FIR After Investigating Officer's Death

In a tragic turn of events in Haryana, IAS officer Amneet Kumar now faces legal action following the suicide of ASI Sandeep Kumar, who was investigating corruption allegations against her husband, IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who also died by suicide last week. Both officers left suicide notes with contradicting claims about corruption, harassment, and caste discrimination, plunging the state police department into controversy and resulting in high-level administrative changes.

The wife of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who died by suicide last week, now faces a police case. Amneet Kumar, an IAS officer herself, has been named in an FIR filed by the wife of a police officer who was investigating corruption allegations against her late husband.

Y Puran Kumar had left behind an eight-page "final note" in which he alleged "mental harassment" and "caste discrimination" from senior officers.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar from Rohtak's cyber cell, who was investigating the corruption case against Puran Kumar, also died by suicide on Tuesday. He shot himself with his service revolver in a field in Rohtak.

In both a suicide note and video message, ASI Sandeep Kumar claimed that Y Puran Kumar was corrupt and suggested that the IPS officer had taken his own life due to fear of his corrupt activities being exposed. The ASI also made serious allegations against Amneet Kumar.

The family of ASI Sandeep Kumar demanded that police register an FIR based on his suicide note and refused to consent to post-mortem until a case was filed.

It should be noted that ASI Sandeep Kumar had been involved in the arrest of Head Constable Sushil Kumar, who was alleged to be an associate of Puran Kumar.

The FIR filed by Sandeep Kumar's wife, Santosh, names Amneet Kumar, her brother and Punjab AAP MLA Amit Rattan, among others as defendants.

Y Puran Kumar's cremation took place following an autopsy at the PGIMER, with his wife expressing hope for a fair investigation that would deliver justice swiftly.

In response to the situation, the Haryana government has placed state Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur on leave and transferred Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya.

Amneet Kumar had previously filed her own FIR against these two officers, accusing them of abetment to suicide and invoking the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in connection with her husband's death.
