Dual Police Suicides in Haryana: Corruption Allegations and Delayed Investigations

Two police officers' suicides in Haryana have exposed serious allegations of corruption, harassment, and systemic issues within the state police force. IPS officer Y Puran Kumar's body was cremated after an eight-day delay as his family demanded action against officers he accused of harassment. Meanwhile, ASI Sandeep Kumar's body remains in the morgue after he committed suicide while alleging corruption against Y Puran Kumar himself. The case has drawn intervention from Haryana's Chief Minister as families demand justice and thorough investigations.

In Haryana Twin Cop Suicide Case, Another Body Waits In Morgue

Sandeep Kumar took his own life after making grave allegations against Y Puran Kumar.

The body of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was finally cremated this afternoon, eight days following his suicide by firearm. The autopsy and funeral proceedings faced significant delays as the IPS officer's family withheld consent for the post-mortem until authorities filed an FIR against senior police officers whom Y Puran Kumar had accused of harassment in his suicide note. After the family eventually provided consent, the senior officer's remains were cremated. Meanwhile, another body remains in the morgue awaiting resolution of a similar situation.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Sandeep Kumar from Rohtak's cyber cell committed suicide yesterday. Authorities discovered his body in a Rohtak field after he used his service revolver to end his life.

In both a suicide note and video message, Sandeep Kumar characterized Y Puran Kumar as corrupt, claiming that the IPS officer took his own life over fears that his alleged corrupt activities would be exposed. Sandeep Kumar also leveled serious accusations against Y Puran Kumar's spouse, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar. Following these developments, Sandeep Kumar's family has demanded authorities register an FIR based on his suicide note and have refused to permit the post-mortem until a case is formally filed.

Bhoop Singh, Sandeep Kumar's brother, informed NDTV, "More than 24 hours have passed since his death, yet no FIR has been registered. We will only allow the post-mortem once authorities file an FIR."

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini visited the bereaved family today. Relatives told media representatives that the Chief Minister assured them of a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

"The Chief Minister came to our home. Four hours have elapsed, and we're still waiting for government officials to respond. We will continue pressing our demands unless authorities take concrete action against individuals named in my brother's suicide note," Bhoop Singh stated.

In his pre-suicide video message, Sandeep Kumar alleged that after Y Puran Kumar's appointment to the Rohtak range, he began replacing honest officers with corrupt ones. "These individuals blocked files, summoned petitioners, and mentally tortured them by demanding money. Women police personnel faced sexual exploitation in exchange for transfers," he claimed.

"His corruption has deep roots. He committed suicide fearing complaints against him," Sandeep alleged. "Authorities must investigate their assets. This isn't a caste issue. The truth must emerge. He was corrupt."

Sandeep Kumar also expressed admiration for Rohtak's former Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, who has since been transferred. Notably, Bijarniya is among the senior officers named in Y Puran Kumar's suicide note. Y Puran Kumar accused ten senior and retired police officers of "blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities."

According to police sources, Sandeep Kumar was involved in the arrest of head constable Sushil Kumar, reportedly an associate of Y Puran Kumar. A liquor contractor had alleged that Sushil Kumar demanded a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh, claiming it was on Y Puran Kumar's behalf.

SS Bhoria, Rohtak's new Superintendent of Police, remarked, "ASI Sandeep was an exceptionally hardworking and honest person in our department."
