Brand New Bus, One Door And Modifications: The Making Of Rajasthan Inferno

The devastating bus fire incident in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer has highlighted the critical safety issue of lacking emergency exits in public transportation vehicles.

Twenty-one individuals lost their lives and 16 others sustained injuries when the private bus en route to Jodhpur erupted in flames. According to eyewitness accounts, passengers attempting to escape found the only door jammed. An excavator was required to break open the door. By the time assistance arrived, many passengers had perished, with others suffering critical injuries. Some survivors managed to escape by breaking windows and jumping out of the burning vehicle.

While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials believe a short circuit may have triggered it. The bus had undergone modifications and contained substantial inflammable material that exacerbated the tragedy. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion before the bus was rapidly engulfed in flames. A forensic examination will determine the precise cause of the fire.

The incident occurred near Thaiyat village, home to a war museum commemorating the 1971 Battle of Longewala. The bus was carrying 57 passengers, including women and children. Many victims' bodies were charred beyond recognition, requiring DNA testing for identification.

Police reports indicate the fire started around 3 pm, with local villagers and passersby responding first. Personnel from the Indian Army's 12th RAPID Division in Jaisalmer arrived with an excavator and water tankers before police and firefighters reached the scene.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the site and expressed profound sorrow over the incident. "The bus fire incident in Jaisalmer is extremely heart-wrenching. I express deep condolences to those affected by this tragic accident. Instructions have been given to ensure proper treatment for the injured and provide all possible assistance," he stated on social media platform X, adding that the state government stands with the victims' families.

Local MLA Pratap Puri noted that the bus contained inflammable material and had a "very narrow" exit. "It appears a short circuit caused the fire, with gas leaking from the AC contributing to it. The modified bus had a narrow exit passage and lacked a second door," he explained.

Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar remarked, "I have never seen such an incident in my life. DNA sampling will be conducted to identify the deceased passengers."
