Chandigarh:
A Chandigarh court has directed IAS officer Amneet P Kumar to respond regarding the identification of her husband's body, IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, for post-mortem examination in a significant development of the ongoing death investigation.
Court documents reveal that Judicial Magistrate First Class Raminder Kaul issued the order on October 14, related to FIR No. 156 dated October 9, registered under sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with sections 3(1)(r) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police Station Sector 11, Chandigarh, is handling the investigation.
This directive follows an application from the DSP and Special Investigation Team (SIT) member requesting court permission to proceed with identifying the deceased IPS officer's body at PGIMER, Chandigarh, as part of post-mortem procedures.
Chandigarh police emphasized that conducting the post-mortem promptly is crucial to preserve critical forensic evidence and serve the interests of justice.
The court has requested Amneet P Kumar to submit her response to the application—either personally or through legal counsel—by October 15, 2025. The court noted that in case of non-compliance, the matter would be decided based on its merits.
Additionally, Chandigarh Police has requested a directive for Amneet Kumar to produce the IPS officer's laptop.
The Special Investigation Team formed by Chandigarh Police continues investigating the circumstances surrounding IPS Y Puran Kumar's tragic death, who allegedly died by suicide at his official Sector 24 residence in Chandigarh on October 7.
During the ongoing investigation, IPS officer Om Prakash Singh assumed charge as Haryana Director General of Police after arriving at the Panchkula police headquarters today.
OP Singh received the additional charge as Haryana DGP following Shatrujeet Kapur's placement on leave earlier Tuesday, amid the continuing investigation into IPS officer Y Puran Kumar's death under suspicious circumstances on October 7 at his Chandigarh residence.
