Google revealed on Tuesday its plans to invest $15 billion in India over the coming five years, announcing the development of a massive data centre and artificial intelligence facility in Andhra Pradesh, which will become its largest AI hub outside the United States.
The American technology giant will construct a 1-gigawatt data centre campus in Visakhapatnam port city, integrating AI infrastructure, substantial energy resources, and an expanded fiber-optic network.
For this AI data centre campus, Google has collaborated with the Adani Group, marking Google's largest investment in India to date.
"It's the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the US," stated Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian during a signing ceremony in Delhi.
Kurian mentioned that Google envisions the centre eventually "scaling to multiple gigawatts."
The event was attended by prominent figures including Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and state IT Minister Nara Lokesh.

Vaishnaw expressed gratitude to Google for the investment, noting that "This digital infrastructure will go a long way in meeting goals of our India AI vision."
Naidu described it as a "very happy day," while Lokesh characterized the deal as a "game-changing investment" resulting from "a year of intense discussions and relentless effort."
"It is a massive leap for our state's digital future, innovation, and global standing," he wrote on X, adding, "This is just the beginning."
This development comes amid growing competition among technology giants who are heavily investing in new data centre infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for AI services.
Microsoft and Amazon have already invested billions in building data centres in India, a country projected to have over 900 million internet users by the end of this year.
OpenAI has announced plans to open an office in India later this year, with CEO Sam Altman highlighting that ChatGPT usage in the country has quadrupled over the past year.
