CCTV Shows Cops Chasing, Beating Engineering Student Hours Before His Death

Exclusive CCTV footage acquired by NDTV has sparked widespread indignation regarding the violent assault that resulted in an engineering student's death in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh last week.

The surveillance video reveals Udit Gayki, partially unclothed, fleeing from a police officer carrying a rifle in the Indrapuri area on October 9. The footage subsequently shows the constable applying pressure with his shoe against the student's foot while another officer converses with Gayki's companions nearby.

This evidence contradicts earlier official statements and has prompted calls for an independent investigation. NDTV's analysis of the footage indicates sustained force by uniformed personnel preceding Gayki's loss of consciousness and subsequent death at the hospital. Medical reports indicate the final-year engineering student suffered from a ruptured pancreas.

"I'm requesting a CBI investigation into this incident," stated the 22-year-old's grieving mother, Sangeeta Gayki. "My only son was subjected to brutal beating... If someone is guilty, they should be imprisoned. Why did they take matters into their own hands?"

His father, Rajkumar Gayki, who collapsed upon seeing his son's remains, told NDTV: "Udit had come back from college with his friends. We received information at 3 am that he was at AIIMS. I demand justice. The perpetrators should receive punishment equivalent to what my son endured."

Two constables from Piplani police station, Santosh Bamaniya and Santosh Arya, have been arrested and placed in judicial custody in connection with the case. Police have confirmed ongoing investigations. Local officials verified the officers are now incarcerated; however, the newly discovered CCTV footage has intensified demands for a more thorough, independent inquiry.

Political figures and civil society have responded to the incident. BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal visited the Gayki residence and met with the bereaved family, receiving a comprehensive account of the events from the parents. Khandelwal promised justice and assured that all guilty parties would face consequences.

During a visit to the mourning family two days prior, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari described the killing as "a shameful and inhuman act."

"A young man was murdered by on-duty police personnel over just ten thousand rupees. It's horrific and disgraceful," Patwari remarked. "This demonstrates the jungle raj prevailing in Madhya Pradesh. Our Chief Minister, who simultaneously serves as Home Minister, hasn't even communicated with the victim's family. Law enforcement has deteriorated in this state; Madhya Pradesh has escaped Mohan Yadav's control," he added.

The family has requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, contending that a local investigation cannot be impartial given the involvement of police personnel.
