Election Commission Issues Notification For Bypolls To 5 Assembly Seats

The Election Commission of India (ECI) released official notifications on Monday for bye-elections across five Assembly constituencies nationwide. The electoral process is scheduled with voting on November 11 and results to be declared on November 14.

In Odisha, the 71-Nuapada Assembly Constituency bye-election timeline includes nomination submissions starting October 20, scrutiny on October 22, and withdrawal deadline of October 24. This seat became vacant following BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia's death on September 8 while receiving medical treatment in Chennai.

For Punjab's 21-Tarn Taran Assembly Constituency, the nomination process commences October 21, followed by scrutiny on October 22 and withdrawals by October 24. Polling stations will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on November 11. This bye-election was necessitated after AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal's passing. Sohal had previously secured victory with 52,935 votes against Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu.

Rajasthan's 193-Anta Assembly Constituency bye-election was announced after MLA Kanwar Lal Meena's disqualification on May 23. According to the notification issued under Sections 150(1), 30, and 56 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, nominations close on October 21, with scrutiny on October 23 and withdrawal opportunities until October 27. Voting will take place on November 11 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Meena's disqualification resulted from a conviction in a 20-year-old criminal case. Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani implemented the disqualification retroactively from May 2, 2025, when the Rajasthan High Court delivered its verdict on Meena's appeal, effectively terminating his House membership.

Additionally, the ECI has published notifications for bye-elections in Jammu and Kashmir's 77-Nagrota and 27-Budgam Assembly Constituencies. Both will follow the same electoral schedule, with nominations beginning October 20, scrutiny on October 22, withdrawals by October 24, and voting on November 11.
