Nupur Bora, an officer with the Assam Civil Service (ACS), was taken into custody on Monday following police raids that uncovered approximately Rs 2 crore in cash and valuable jewelry from her properties.
The Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell conducted searches that yielded Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewelry worth nearly Rs 1 crore at her Guwahati home, with an additional Rs 10 lakh discovered at her rented accommodation in Barpeta.
According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, authorities had been monitoring Bora for six months due to suspected involvement in controversial land transactions. The investigation remains ongoing.
## Background of Nupur Bora
Nupur Bora, born on March 31, 1989, hails from Golaghat district in Assam and joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019. At the time of her arrest, she was serving as Circle Officer in Goroimari, Kamrup district.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Gauhati University after studying at Cotton College. Before embarking on her civil service career, Bora worked as a lecturer at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), as indicated on her Facebook profile.
Her administrative career began as Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong from March 2019 until June 2023. Subsequently, she was appointed Circle Officer in Barpeta before being transferred to her current position in Kamrup.
## Corruption Allegations
Despite only six years in government service, Bora allegedly amassed considerable wealth, including properties and cash holdings significantly disproportionate to her official salary.
The Special Vigilance Cell also searched the home of Surajit Deka, a Lat Mandal at the Revenue Circle Office in Barpeta who is reportedly Bora's associate. Deka stands accused of acquiring multiple land properties in Barpeta with Bora's assistance during her tenure as Circle Officer there.
