Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has made his first public statement regarding the IPS officer's suicide case, promising justice to the bereaved family.
Chandigarh:
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday broke his silence on the tragic suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, firmly assuring the deceased officer's family that justice will be served.
The 52-year-old Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, reportedly took his own life with a firearm at his Sector-11 residence in Chandigarh on Tuesday, leaving behind what authorities describe as a "final note."
The BJP-led government in Haryana has come under intense criticism from opposition parties regarding the officer's alleged suicide, with many demanding an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
While addressing BJP party workers in Panchkula, Saini acknowledged that Kumar's family has expressed their desire for justice. "I have assured them that we will thoroughly investigate this matter, and anyone found guilty will face consequences, regardless of their position or influence," the Chief Minister stated.
Saini also confirmed he has spoken directly with the officer's wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, and revealed that his administration is coordinating with central authorities to resolve the matter.
The Chief Minister urged opposition parties to refrain from politicizing the tragedy. "If the family believes they have suffered injustice, we are committed to ensuring they receive proper justice," he emphasized.
Describing Kumar's death as deeply unfortunate, Saini mentioned he had arranged for two officers to accompany Amneet Kumar when she was returning to India from Japan after learning about her husband's passing.
Notably, Amneet Kumar was part of a delegation led by Chief Minister Saini on an official three-day visit to Japan when the tragic incident occurred in Chandigarh.
The bereaved wife has alleged that her husband's death resulted from "systematic persecution" by high-ranking officers within the police force.
Upon returning from Japan, Chief Minister Saini personally met with Amneet Kumar to express his condolences.
On Thursday, the Chandigarh Police registered an FIR on charges of abetment to suicide and under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, based on the contents of the officer's "final note."
In his eight-page note, Puran Kumar named several senior IPS officers, specifically mentioning Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak's Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, accusing them of harassment and character assassination.
The Chandigarh Police has formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday to conduct a "prompt, impartial and thorough" investigation within a specified timeframe. The SIT will be headed by Chandigarh's Inspector General Pushpendra Kumar.
In her complaint filed with the Chandigarh Police on Wednesday, Amneet Kumar requested an FIR against Kapur and Bijarniya under section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abetment to suicide) and relevant sections of the SC-ST Act, demanding their immediate arrest.
Police have confirmed that a "will" and the "final note" were among the items recovered from the scene where the officer's body was discovered on Tuesday.
