Bhopal:

Bhopal residents witnessed an extraordinary corruption case unfold on Thursday when the Lokayukta anti-corruption ombudsman raided the properties of retired Public Works Department (PWD) Chief Engineer GP Mehra, revealing an astonishing accumulation of wealth.

What began as a routine disproportionate assets investigation quickly transformed into one of Madhya Pradesh's most remarkable corruption cases in recent memory, characterized by excessive greed and extravagance.

The sheer volume of cash necessitated money-counting machines, with gold valued at over Rs 3 crore and silver measured in kilograms. However, the most surprising discovery was 17 tonnes of honey stored methodically at Mehra's farmhouse.

The early morning operation, led by four Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)-level Lokayukta officers, became a major event as teams dispersed across four locations throughout Bhopal and Narmadapuram.

At Mehra's residence in Manipuram Colony, officials discovered Rs 8.79 lakh in cash, jewelry worth approximately Rs 50 lakh, and fixed deposits totaling Rs 56 lakh. The most significant findings, however, were at his second residence, a luxury apartment in Opal Regency near Dana Pani, where investigators found Rs 26 lakh in cash, 2.6 kilograms of gold worth Rs 3.05 crore, and 5.5 kilograms of silver.

While the urban properties displayed obvious wealth, Mehra's farmhouse in village Saini, Tehsil Sohagpur (Narmadapuram), revealed an extraordinary empire of luxury. Officials encountered an unusual assortment of assets - 17 tonnes of honey, six tractors, 32 cottages under construction, seven completed cottages, and even a private pond with fish farming infrastructure. The property also included a cowshed, a temple, and luxury vehicles, including a Ford Endeavour, Skoda Slavia, Kia Sonet, and Maruti Ciaz, all registered to the Mehra family.

The investigation extended to KT Industries in the Govindpura Industrial Area, believed to be Mehra's business operation. Here, authorities found equipment, raw materials, Rs 1.25 lakh in cash, and documentation showing Mehra's relatives as partners in the business.

At KT industries, investigators discovered equipment, raw materials and Rs 1.25 lakh in cash.

By evening, the total seizure resembled a royal treasury inventory: Rs 36.04 lakh in cash, 2.649 kg of gold, 5.523 kg of silver, fixed deposits, insurance policies, share certificates, multiple properties, and four luxury vehicles. Lokayukta officials confirmed that asset valuation was ongoing and expected to reach several crores. Meanwhile, forensic teams have been assigned to examine seized documents, digital files, and banking records, while investigators trace Mehra's financial activities for potential benami investments.
