Andhra MP Accused in Liquor Case Demands CBI Probe Into Alleged Fake Alcohol Racket

YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy, currently facing charges in a multi-crore liquor scam case, has requested a CBI investigation into an alleged counterfeit alcohol operation in Andhra Pradesh. Despite being out on conditional bail as Accused No 4 in a Rs 3,200-crore scandal, Reddy claims the current ruling coalition is providing political patronage to illegal liquor manufacturing that poses public health risks.

Liquor Case-Accused Andhra MP Seeks Probe Into 'Fake Alcohol Racket'

YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy has addressed Union Home Minister Amit Shah through formal correspondence, requesting a CBI investigation into the alleged counterfeit Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) operations in Andhra Pradesh.

The Rajampet representative in Lok Sabha has claimed that the manufacturing and distribution of fake liquor, which presents significant health hazards to the public, is occurring with the alleged political support of the current governing alliance.

The YSRCP leader's request carries considerable political paradox, as Reddy himself faces accusations in a purported multi-crore liquor scandal filed by N Chandrababu Naidu's administration, and is currently released on conditional bail.

In his communication, Reddy contended that the scale of the alleged spurious alcohol operation, which has seen significant enforcement actions in regions like Mulakalacheruvu and Ibrahimpatnam, and reportedly involves connections to ruling party officials, is too extensive and politically complex for state agencies to investigate fairly.

He emphasized that only a federal agency such as the CBI could conduct an unbiased examination of the network that threatens citizens' wellbeing.

"Immediate governmental intervention is necessary to protect public safety," stated the YSRCP representative, while his political organization simultaneously alleges that the Telugu Desam Party coalition is facilitating illicit alcohol trade for monetary advantage.

Reddy was detained by the state government's Special Investigation Team (SIT) in July. He is identified as Accused No 4 in connection with an alleged Rs 3,200-crore liquor scandal that purportedly occurred during the previous YSRCP government between 2019 and 2024. The SIT has characterized him as a "core conspirator" who allegedly orchestrated policy modifications to obtain kickbacks from distilleries.

Following 71 days in judicial detention at Rajahmundry Central Jail, Reddy received conditional bail from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court in the previous month. His bail stipulations include providing a Rs 2 lakh bond, reporting to the SIT twice weekly, and abstaining from public commentary regarding the alleged scandal.

The YSRCP has consistently asserted that the case against Reddy is "politically motivated" and constitutes a "vindictive conspiracy" by the Naidu administration to suppress opposition voices. In contrast, the governing TDP has rejected YSRCP's current allegations concerning counterfeit liquor as "baseless propaganda" intended to divert public attention from the alleged Rs 3,200 crore scandal.
