Sunjay Kapur Inheritance Battle: Children Accuse Stepmother of Forging Will for Rs 30,000 Crore Estate

The high-profile inheritance dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur's Rs 30,000-crore fortune has intensified as his children with ex-wife Karisma Kapoor accuse their stepmother Priya Sachdev Kapur of forging his will. Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the children, compared Priya to "Cinderella's stepmother" during dramatic Delhi High Court proceedings, claiming she secured 60% of the assets while leaving nothing for Sunjay's mother and children.

"She is greedy. She got 60 per cent of the assets," said Mahesh Jethmalani on Priya Kapur.

New Delhi:

The inheritance dispute over Sunjay Kapur's Rs 30,000-crore fortune escalated today when the senior attorney representing Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor's children compared the late industrialist's widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, to Cinderella's stepmother.

"She is like Cinderella's stepmother," senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani stated, referring to Priya Sachdev Kapur, who he claimed was in a "glaring hurry" to limit the children's shares. Jethmalani continued by calling her "greedy" for allegedly securing "60 per cent" of her late husband's assets.

"She is greedy. She got 60 per cent of the assets and allotted 12 per cent to her son. She is also getting 75 per cent of the trust... She is only concerned with her personal assets," he declared during a dramatic proceeding in the Delhi High Court. "Cinderella" is a well-known fairy tale about the title character who suffered mistreatment from her stepmother, who favored only her two daughters.

The Delhi High Court was hearing a petition filed by Karisma Kapoor's children - Samaira and Kiaan Kapoor - challenging their late father Sunjay Kapur's alleged will.

They requested status quo on assets left behind by Kapur. "The prayer basically is for a status quo in respect of creating third-party rights in the will," Jethmalani explained.

Samaira (20) and Kiaan Kapoor (15) have accused their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur (Sunjay Kapur's third wife), of taking "full control" of their father's assets by "forging" his will, dated March 21, 2025, following his sudden death in June this year during a polo match in the United Kingdom. Karisma Kapoor was his second wife.

"Manifestly Forged Document"

The petitioners reiterated the forgery allegation in court today, stating, "It's a manifestly forged document... It's a conspiracy; there is enough material for a criminal complaint".

"The forgery of a will attracts life imprisonment. It's a case where you are taking the entire justice system to be a joke," they declared.

The will allegedly bequeaths Sunjay Kapur's entire personal estate to Priya Sachdev Kapur.

Questioning the will's validity, Jethmalani argued that someone of Sunjay Kapur's stature would have consulted a lawyer before creating such an important document, but prima facie, it does not appear that way. It resembles a "clumsy forgery," something "no lawyer would take credit for," he asserted.

"When I read the will, it is such a clumsy forgery that I dare say that no lawyer worth his salt would take credit for the creation of that will. It is impossible that Sunjay Kapur, bequeathing such a large estate in particular, would not have consulted a lawyer and got the will drafted by him. This question is not answered. Who drafted it? It is not a lawyer," he stated.

"Those Who Forged Will Got Rewarded"

The lawyer also claimed that Sunjay Kapur "has no role in this will". "The will was last modified in March. Between 15-18 March, Sunjay was on holiday with plaintiff 2 (Kiaan)."

"He cut short his holiday because his mother fell ill, and this will is modified on March 17. But by whom? Not by Sunjay. This Word file was stored on someone else's device...and this person was later made a director," he added.

Mahesh Jethmalani also stated that those who forged the will received rewards. "People who forged the will got rewarded. Nitin (Sharma) was made a director in one of the companies," he said, suggesting an alleged "conspiracy".

Nitin Sharma is reportedly an associate of Priya Sachdev Kapur. Previously, Samaira and her brother claimed that Sachdev Kapur conspired with her two associates, Dinesh Agarwal and Nitin Sharma, to withhold the will for weeks before revealing it at a family meeting.

The children, represented by their mother, have requested one-fifth share each in their late father's assets. This current suit is separate from what they will inherit from the RK Family Trust, named after Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur.

Earlier, Priya Sachdev Kapur informed the Delhi High Court that Samaira and Kiaan Kapoor had already received Rs 1,900 crore from the family trust. "What more do they want?" asked Kapur's counsel, Rajiv Nayar.

In court today, Jethmalani claimed that the plaintiffs received nothing and "no reason was given for disinheritance". "You have to say specifically why they are being denied and most importantly, the mother (Rani Kapur)...she has been given nothing."

Rani Kapur has also alleged that her son's personal assets have been "usurped" by his wife. She has contested the will, saying nothing was left for her. She also claimed she sent more than 15 emails to Priya Kapur seeking clarity on the will but received no response.

The court will resume hearing the matter on October 13.
