Karnataka Implements Monthly Paid Menstrual Leave for All Women Employees

Women employees across both government and private sectors in Karnataka will now be entitled to one paid menstrual leave per month, following a significant cabinet decision announced today.

The policy extends to women working in various organizations throughout the state, including government offices, garment industries, multinational companies, and IT firms.

This progressive decision was implemented with careful consideration of working women's health and well-being, with the cabinet expressing its commitment to fostering a more supportive and inclusive workplace environment.

According to the cabinet note: "The decision was taken keeping in mind the health and well-being of working women and to encourage a more inclusive and supportive work environment. The initiative also aims to spread awareness about menstrual health and ensure physical and mental comfort for women employees."

State Law Minister HK Patil expressed confidence in the policy's positive impact, stating: "It will be helpful to women. The policy has been successful in other states, and we have decided to adopt it."

With this implementation, Karnataka joins several other forward-thinking Indian states that have already established menstrual leave provisions as part of their workplace welfare reforms, including Bihar, Odisha, Kerala, and Sikkim.

The private sector has also been making strides in this area, with companies like Zomato, Swiggy, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Byju's, and Gozoop having already introduced their own paid menstrual leave policies.

Women's rights activist Brinda Adige praised the government's decision, noting: "The government's introduction of a one-day menstrual leave is a commendable step toward recognising the genuine health needs of women in the workplace. By institutionalising such support in government and organised private sectors, this policy affirms that women's well-being is integral to sustainable development."

She further added: "While the informal sector remains a challenge, this initiative lays a vital foundation for broader health empowerment, enabling increased female participation and fostering inclusive state growth."
