Navi Mumbai International Airport is initially projected to accommodate 20 million passengers annually.
New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the cutting-edge Navi Mumbai International Airport this afternoon. This new aviation hub is expected to significantly enhance trade and tourism opportunities for Mumbai, Pune, and the Konkan region.
Here are the key highlights from this significant development:
Before the formal inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi was given a comprehensive tour of the airport facilities. The event was attended by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his enthusiasm on social platform X, stating, "The wait is finally over. This airport is set to redefine air travel, boost Maharashtra's growth, and connect India to the world like never before."
Constructed at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore, the airport has an initial capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually. Beyond providing seamless travel options, it will offer industries in Pune direct access to global markets.
The development was executed through a Public-Private Partnership between Mumbai International Airport Ltd (an Adani Airports Holdings Ltd subsidiary) and CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd).
Prior to the inauguration, Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, acknowledged the collaborative efforts behind the project. In response to a social media post by his youngest son Jeet Adani, Director of Airports at the Adani Group, he wrote, "To every hand that worked and every heart that cared, this is your creation".
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, highlighted that the airport will "propel Maharashtra to new heights" in his X platform post. He emphasized the significant benefits the project will bring to Pune, Mumbai, and the Konkan region by providing direct access to global markets.
As India's largest Greenfield airport project featuring a 3,700-metre runway, it will operate in conjunction with Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
This second international airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will help alleviate congestion and elevate Mumbai into the elite category of cities with multi-airport systems, joining global metropolises like London, Tokyo, and New York.
Several airlines including IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express have already announced plans to commence operations, with initial flights connecting various domestic destinations.
Upon full completion, the airport will have the capacity to serve 90 million passengers and manage over 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo annually.
