Currently, travelers need to cancel and rebook tickets if they want to change their journey date
New Delhi:
Unexpected changes in travel plans often create difficulties for passengers. Indian Railways has now developed a new policy to help travelers adjust their itineraries without financial losses.
Beginning in January, passengers will be able to modify the travel date of their confirmed train tickets online without any additional charges, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in his statement to NDTV.
At present, passengers are required to cancel their existing ticket and purchase a new one when changing travel dates, resulting in deductions depending on the cancellation timing. This process is both expensive and inconvenient for many travelers.
"This system is unfair and not in the interest of passengers," stated Vaishnaw. He confirmed that directives have been issued to implement these passenger-friendly changes.
The Railway Minister clarified that while date changes will be free, confirmed seats on the new date cannot be guaranteed as they depend on availability. Furthermore, if the fare for the new date is higher, passengers will need to cover the price difference.
This policy change will benefit millions of railway passengers who need to reschedule their journeys but currently face substantial cancellation penalties.
Under existing regulations, cancelling a confirmed ticket between 48 and 12 hours before departure results in a 25 percent fare deduction. Cancellation fees increase when done between 12 and 4 hours before departure. After the reservation chart is prepared, refunds for cancellations are typically not provided.
