West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Defends Durga Puja Carnival Amid North Bengal Disaster, Visits Injured BJP MP

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee defended holding Durga Puja carnival despite north Bengal's flood disaster and made a courtesy visit to injured BJP MP Khagen Murmu, while political tensions escalate over disaster response and alleged attacks on opposition leaders. The Chief Minister promised support for affected families while facing criticism from BJP leadership over priorities and law enforcement.

Mamata Banerjee's 'Courtesy' Visit To Injured MP, BJP's 'No Arrest' Question

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited flood and landslide-affected regions in north Bengal, addressing criticism over the state's priorities during the natural disaster.

In response to BJP's criticism regarding the Durga Puja carnival proceeding despite north Bengal's calamity, Banerjee defended the decision, explaining that numerous clubs had already prepared for the event, which represents "Bengal's pride." She added that postponing would have disappointed participants and foreign tourists.

Banerjee argued that her immediate presence in the disaster-struck areas might have hampered rescue operations due to VIP movement. "Who will the administration manage? The people or the VIPs? If some enter with 30 vehicles to meet people, that creates pressure on the hills," she stated, noting that effective rescue and relief efforts require at least 48 hours following natural disasters.

The Chief Minister made a "courtesy visit" to BJP MP Khagen Murmu, who was attacked while visiting flood-affected areas in Jalpaiguri's Dooars region. "I heard that he is injured, which is why I paid a visit. He is a diabetic, which is why he needs to be kept under observation. He is not that serious," Banerjee commented after reviewing the doctor's reports.

It remains unclear whether Banerjee met BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh, who was also injured in the attack and with whom she has previously exchanged harsh words in the Assembly.

While state BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya acknowledged the "courtesy visit," he questioned why no arrests had been made 24 hours after the assault. The BJP alleges that Trinamool Congress workers perpetrated the attack.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident as "outright appalling" and criticized the state's "pathetic law and order situation." Banerjee retorted, accusing the Prime Minister of "politicising a natural disaster."

During her visit to affected areas, Banerjee claimed the Center withholds funds from Bengal for flood management. "We need to tackle this situation very peacefully. Listening to those affected is our first duty," she said, promising job provisions within 15 days for one member from each of the 21 families who lost relatives.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari dismissed Banerjee's funding claims as "false and fabricated" and called for central agencies like the NIA or CBI to investigate the assault on BJP leaders, suggesting possible involvement of "terror outfits from Bangladesh."
