Time To Apologise, Accept Mistake: Kamal Haasan Visits Karur Stampede Site

Kamal Haasan visited the Karur stampede site on Monday to meet with the families of victims, emphasizing that it is "time to apologise, time to accept mistake." The Makkal Needhi Maiam chief expressed his condolences following the tragic incident at a TVK rally led by actor Vijay.

The devastating stampede on September 27 claimed the lives of 41 people and left over 50 injured, marking one of India's worst political event tragedies in recent memory. The incident occurred during a rally addressed by Vijay, who heads the newly formed Tamila Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

"I've come to express condolences to the victims of Karur tragedy. Don't see this tragedy as numbers. Look at them as mothers, sisters and elderly," Haasan stated. As a Rajya Sabha MP, he cautioned against commenting extensively as the investigation is ongoing and the matter is sub-judice.

Haasan urged people not to take sides in the matter except for "the people's side," while commending Chief Minister MK Stalin for displaying "exemplary leadership" in the aftermath of the tragedy. The actor-politician emphasized that responsibility should not be shifted, saying, "do not keep blaming somebody else."

While Haasan has made this visit, Vijay himself has yet to meet with the bereaved families. The stampede occurred during the third week of Vijay's first statewide tour with his newly launched political party.

Following the incident, two TVK functionaries have been arrested, including district secretary Mathiyazhagan. Senior leaders Bussy Anand (General Secretary) and Nirmal Kumar (Deputy General Secretary) remain at large after being denied anticipatory bail by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. They face serious charges including attempt to murder and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

A Special Investigation Team led by Inspector General of Police Asra Garg has been formed to investigate the tragedy, following a High Court directive. The court also criticized Vijay for departing the venue after the incident and temporarily suspended public meetings and rallies along highways until proper guidelines are established.

The State government has formed a single-member inquiry commission headed by retired judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. Chief Minister Stalin has promised to develop model guidelines for political gatherings based on the commission's forthcoming recommendations.

Amid growing criticism, Vijay has alleged a conspiracy by the ruling DMK party, a claim strongly refuted by both the DMK and State Police. Authorities instead accuse the TVK chief of violating safety protocols and using the event to demonstrate political strength.

The State government has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. Vijay's party has pledged Rs 20 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively from party funds.
