In a startling incident of moral policing in Uttarakhand, members of a right-wing organization confronted models for wearing brief attire during a practice session for the 'Miss Rishikesh' beauty contest.
Led by Raghvendra Bhatnagar, state president of the Rashtriya Hindu Shakti Sangathan, the group expressed disapproval of the ramp walk event organized by Lions Club Rishikesh on Friday.
Social media footage captured Bhatnagar engaging in a heated discussion with contestants, voicing objections to their Western clothing choices.
"Modelling khatam ho gayi, ghar jao (modelling is done, go back to your homes)," Bhatnagar was heard telling approximately a dozen participants.
"Don't spoil Rishikesh's culture. This is not our culture," he further stated.
One contestant challenged Bhatnagar, suggesting he should stop all shops from selling such garments.
He responded by instructing her not to address him, to which she replied, "Then you also don't say anything to us. Let us do what we are doing."
Bhatnagar countered that they "can do whatever they want to do at their homes."
The contestant questioned his authority, asking, "Who are you?"
Bhatnagar informed them they could remain, but he would "stop the show."
"You are ruining Uttarakhand's culture," he asserted.
Pankaj Chandani, president of the Lions Club Rishikesh, defended the contestants, stating they are adults capable of making their own clothing decisions.
Police reported receiving no formal complaints, noting that the matter was resolved between the parties involved.
Reports indicate the Miss Rishikesh pageant proceeded as scheduled on Saturday.
