A Hyderabad-based doctor recently performed the traditional "vahan puja" for his newly purchased Tesla Model Y, capturing widespread attention on social media with his culturally rooted approach to modern technology.
Dr. Praveen Koduru shared images on X showing his vibrant red Tesla adorned with a large ceremonial garland, parked at a temple entrance. The vehicle's wheels were decorated with kumkum (vermilion), following Indian traditions. His family members dressed in festive attire stood proudly beside the car.
In his viral post, Dr. Koduru humorously remarked, "No car, including Tesla, can get a five-star safety rating in Indian culture unless a vahan puja is done," while tagging Elon Musk and Tesla India in his message.
Vahan puja represents a deeply rooted cultural practice in India, performed whenever someone purchases a new vehicle. This ritual, believed to bestow safety and prosperity, typically involves bringing the vehicle to a temple or having a priest conduct ceremonies including breaking a coconut, applying vermilion, and decorating the vehicle with garlands.
The post quickly generated numerous responses across social media platforms. One user commented, "The car definitely looks even better in Indian aesthetics," appreciating how traditional elements complemented the modern vehicle.
Another commenter humorously noted, "Even Tesla is not safe without nimbu or mirchi," referring to the traditional lemon and chili talisman often hung on vehicles in India for protection.
Someone else quipped, "In India, vahan puja is the ultimate crash test certification," suggesting that cultural blessings are considered as important as technical safety ratings.
Just days before the ceremony, Dr. Koduru had announced his Tesla acquisition with enthusiasm, stating, "Thrilled beyond words to finally get my hands on the new Tesla Model Y today. It's the very first one zooming into Hyderabad! This tech-packed beast is a total dream come true. Huge shoutout to @elonmusk for engineering this absolute marvel! Can't wait to hit the road!"
Tesla officially established its presence in India earlier this year, launching its first showroom in Mumbai's BKC in July, followed by a Delhi store opening on August 11.
