Vijay has suspended his statewide tour after 41 people died in a stampede at his Karur rally
Chennai:
Actor-politician Vijay's party, TVK, has suspended his statewide tour for two weeks following a tragic stampede in Tamil Nadu's Karur that claimed 41 lives and sparked widespread outrage.
TVK announced this decision through their official X handle, stating: "In this situation where we are experiencing pain and sorrow over the loss of our loved ones, our party leader's public meeting program for the next two weeks is being temporarily postponed. New details regarding these public meetings will be announced later."
The suspension was anticipated as Vijay has yet to meet with the families of the 41 victims, although he has announced financial relief of Rs 20 lakh for each affected family. In a recorded video released yesterday, Vijay mentioned he would meet the families soon. The tragic incident has created fear among party members and the public. Police will now scrutinize venues more carefully, and significant efforts are needed from all parties to rebuild public confidence.
The 51-year-old actor has faced severe criticism after the stampede claimed 41 lives, primarily women and children, at his rally on Sunday. State police reported that nearly 30,000 people gathered at a venue designed to accommodate only about 10,000. Security guidelines were violated, and proper arrangements for food and drinking water were lacking, according to police statements, which identified these factors as contributing to the tragedy. It was also noted that while people began gathering at the venue around noon, Vijay only arrived at 7 pm.
TVK leaders have rejected these allegations, pointing out that they have previously organized several large rallies without incident. The party has also suggested a conspiracy involving local DMK leaders, an accusation the ruling party has dismissed.
Prominent TVK leaders, including the party's second-in-command and Vijay's aide N Anand, have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, endangering human life, and disobeying orders issued by public servants. They also face charges under the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act. TVK's Karur West district secretary, Mathiyazhagan, and South City treasurer, Pounraj, have been arrested and are currently under interrogation.
In an emotional video released yesterday, Vijay stated he had "never faced such a painful situation." Explaining his absence from Karur after the tragedy, he said, "I didn't visit Karur as it would lead to an unusual situation. I will meet you (families of the victims and the injured) soon."
Sending a clear message to the MK Stalin-led DMK government, he added, "CM sir, if you have a thought of seeking vengeance, you may do anything to me and not touch the party men."
