Mumbai Leads Metropolitan Cities in Economic Fraud Cases in 2023 Despite Yearly Decrease: NCRB Report

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Mumbai topped the list of metropolitan cities with 6,476 economic offence cases in 2023, despite showing a decrease from 2022 figures. Maharashtra ranked third nationally in financial fraud cases, while also placing fourth in cybercrime incidents, highlighting the ongoing challenges of economic crimes across India's major urban centers.

Maharashtra has experienced an upward trend in financial fraud cases in recent years.

Mumbai, India's financial hub, led all metropolitan cities with 6,476 economic offence cases registered in 2023, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

Despite topping the list, Mumbai actually saw a decrease in such cases compared to 2022. The city reported 5,671 cases in 2021, which rose to 6,960 in 2022, before dropping by 484 cases in 2023. Police have filed chargesheets in 37.9 percent of these cases.

Following Mumbai in the metropolitan rankings was Hyderabad with 5,728 economic offence cases, while Jaipur ranked third with 5,304 cases.

At the state level, Maharashtra registered 19,803 financial fraud cases in 2023, continuing an upward trend from 18,729 cases in 2022 and 15,550 in 2021. However, Maharashtra ranked third nationally, behind Rajasthan (27,675 cases) and Telangana (26,321 cases). Maharashtra police filed chargesheets in 54.9 percent of these cases.

Regarding cybercrime, Maharashtra recorded 8,103 cases in 2023, placing it fourth among Indian states. Karnataka led this category with 21,889 cybercrime cases.

Among metropolitan cities, Mumbai registered 4,131 cybercrime cases in 2023, ranking third. Bengaluru topped the cybercrime statistics with 17,631 cases, followed by Hyderabad with 4,855 cases.
