Hyderabad authorities have dismantled an elaborate movie piracy network spanning multiple states with the arrest of five individuals allegedly responsible for leaking high-profile films, causing estimated losses of Rs 3,700 crore to the Telugu film industry.
The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police investigation revealed a sophisticated operation that employed both advanced server hacking techniques and in-theatre recording methods, with all financial transactions conducted exclusively through cryptocurrency channels.
The arrested suspects are connected to the unauthorized distribution of several major releases and upcoming titles, including HIT 3, Single, Kubera, Hari Hara Veera Mallu, and Game Changer. These pirated copies were distributed through notorious websites such as 1TamilBlasters, Movierulz, and 1Tamil.
The operation's ringleader was identified as Cyril Raj from Tamil Nadu, the mastermind behind the 1TamilBlasters piracy platform. Operating servers from overseas locations, he allegedly uploaded more than 500 films since 2020. His cryptocurrency earnings exceeded Rs 2 crore during this period, with monthly revenue from betting app partnerships sometimes reaching Rs 9 lakh.
Ashwani Kumar from Bihar specialized in compromising digital studio servers to acquire pristine HD copies of films prior to their official release. He reportedly charged $800 per stolen movie. Investigators noted his extraordinary security precautions, including the deployment of 22 CCTV cameras surrounding his residence.
Jana Kiran, based in Hyderabad, focused on recording over 100 Telugu films directly within theaters using an iPhone, selling these lower-quality copies for $300-400 each.
Sudhakaran from Tamil Nadu served as the distribution specialist, recording and swiftly uploading 35 Tamil and Telugu productions, utilizing Telegram's rapid distribution capabilities.
Arsalan Ahmed from Goa managed the operation's technical and financial infrastructure, overseeing file uploads, cryptocurrency wallet operations, and Telegram distribution channels.
Perhaps the most significant discovery was the operation's financial structure, which completely circumvented traditional banking systems. All transactions between content thieves, website operators, and advertisers were conducted exclusively through cryptocurrencies, primarily Bitcoin and Tether (a stablecoin linked to the US dollar).
For example, piracy site operators or betting app promoters would transfer the $800 fee for leaked HD content directly to Ashwani Kumar's digital wallet in Bitcoin.
Cyril Raj reportedly received a minimum of $10,000 monthly in cryptocurrency from online betting and gaming platforms that advertised on his piracy websites, with his demands occasionally reaching $30,000 per month.
The cryptocurrency was transferred to digital wallets (including Binance and Blockchain.com) and subsequently converted to Indian Rupees using sophisticated crypto-to-cash intermediaries. Investigators noted that the entire operation was effectively monetized through this cryptocurrency trail.
The Telugu film industry, which has long struggled against widespread piracy, has welcomed this breakthrough. Industry officials have emphasized the need for more stringent cyber legislation to address the evolving nature of these cryptocurrency-funded film piracy operations.
Hyderabad's police chief has outlined practical preventive measures for all stakeholders and stressed the importance of robust cybersecurity practices.
Theater owners have been advised to enhance on-site vigilance, restrict recording devices, and implement advanced surveillance systems to prevent in-venue piracy attempts. Production companies have been instructed to maintain strict content custody chains and employ robust forensic watermarking technologies.
