A woman in Muzaffarnagar has filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws after allegedly receiving triple talaq via WhatsApp, following continuous dowry harassment.
In Basera village of Uttar Pradesh, authorities have registered a formal case against a man who reportedly pronounced the illegal divorce to his wife through a messaging platform.
Circle Officer Ravishankar confirmed that an FIR was registered on Sunday based on the complaint filed by Asma against her husband Hasan, mother-in-law Rashida, and brothers-in-law Salim and Shakir.
According to Asma's statement, she married Hasan in November 2017 but faced persistent harassment for dowry demands. The situation eventually forced her to return to her parents' home.
The complaint states that on March 31, 2025, Hasan sent her a WhatsApp message illegally pronouncing triple talaq, violating the law that prohibits this practice.
Officials have filed the case under relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, which explicitly bans instant triple talaq.
Law enforcement authorities are currently searching for the accused individuals, who remain at large since the complaint was filed.
The case highlights the continuing practice of instant triple talaq despite its prohibition under Indian law, particularly when combined with dowry harassment issues.
