Donald Trump Portrayed as Demon 'Asura' in Bengal Durga Puja Festival Following Trade Tariffs and Visa Restrictions

A Durga Puja pandal in Baharampur, West Bengal has created controversy by depicting former US President Donald Trump as the demon 'asura', citing his 50% tariffs on Indian goods and strict visa policies as betrayal of friendship with Prime Minister Modi. The artistic representation, created by local artist Asim Pal, has gone viral on social media, sparking debates about the intersection of religion and political commentary during the sacred Hindu festival celebrating the triumph of good over evil.

A Durga Puja celebration in Baharampur, West Bengal, has garnered significant attention by depicting former US President Donald Trump as the 'asura' or demon figure. The Khagra Shmashanghat Durga Puja Committee explained that their portrayal stems from Trump's controversial policies, particularly his implementation of a 50% tariff on Indian exports and restrictive visa regulations.

Committee members specifically highlighted what they perceive as Trump's betrayal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had previously considered Trump an ally and friend.

Pratik, representing the Khagra Shmashanghat Durga Puja Committee, explained to Ananda Bazar, "Our decision reflects a response to Trump's 50 percent tariff imposed on India and his restrictive visa policies. Our Prime Minister had regarded Donald Trump as a friend, but Trump violated that friendship. This is why we have portrayed him as a demon."

Local artist Asim Pal crafted the idol, which was officially unveiled with Baharampur Municipality Chairman Narugopal Mukhopadhyay in attendance. The Trump-inspired demon figure quickly became viral on social media.

A Facebook video documenting the creation process shows artisans carefully styling the asura's hair and eyebrows to capture Trump's recognizable features.

One social media user commented, "Why is the statue better looking than the original piece?"

Another simply wrote, "Trump-asur."

A different perspective came from someone who noted, "Puja and devotion should be practiced properly. It's preferable not to politicize religious celebrations to appease political factions. This is about worship, not political statements."

In Hindu mythology, asuras are typically portrayed as powerful entities who oppose the devas (gods) and disrupt cosmic harmony (dharma). They commonly embody negative characteristics such as greed, arrogance, and betrayal.

The central narrative behind Durga Puja recounts Goddess Durga's triumph over Mahishasura, the buffalo demon. Mahishasura had acquired tremendous power through devotional austerities and received a divine blessing that no man could defeat him. He subsequently abused this power by threatening both celestial and earthly realms.

To restore balance, the gods collectively created Goddess Durga, equipping her with their divine weapons. She eventually conquered Mahishasura, restoring cosmic order.

Durga Puja thus celebrates the triumph of righteousness over malevolence.

In mythological contexts, asuras are frequently characterized as betrayers or challengers of divine order. They violate trust, misuse divine gifts, or disturb societal harmony. Betrayal represents a fundamental trait that defines "asura-like" behavior.

In August, Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on Indian imports, intensifying trade tensions between the nations. This measure specifically targeted India's continued oil purchases from Russia.

Approximately two-thirds of India's exports to the United States, valued at roughly $66 billion, have been affected, impacting industries including textiles, leather, and gemstones. Reports quickly emerged of factory closures and employment losses, particularly in Tamil Nadu.

In response, the Indian government has encouraged citizens to support locally-made products and promoted "Swadeshi" goods to safeguard domestic industries.
