Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that India's interest in Khadi has grown remarkably over the past 11 years during his 126th 'Mann Ki Baat' address on Sunday.
New Delhi:
During his 126th episode of 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged all Indians to embrace 'Swadeshi' this Gandhi Jayanti and take pride in supporting locally-made products.
"Gandhi Jayanti falls on October 2. Mahatma Gandhi consistently advocated for adopting Swadeshi, with Khadi being the most significant symbol of this movement. Regrettably, after Independence, Khadi's appeal began to diminish. However, in the last 11 years, there has been a notable increase in the country's attraction towards Khadi, resulting in substantial growth in sales," Prime Minister Modi stated.
"I encourage everyone to purchase at least one Khadi product on October 2. Display it proudly as Swadeshi and share on social media using the hashtag 'Vocal for Local'," he further remarked.
The Prime Minister noted, "Similar to Khadi, our handloom and handicraft sectors are also experiencing significant transformation," adding that numerous examples across India demonstrate how "combining tradition with innovation can yield remarkable results."
He cited Yaazh Naturals in Tamil Nadu as an example of this successful fusion.
"Ashok Jagdishan and Prem Selvaraj left their corporate careers to pursue a new initiative there. They created yoga mats from grass and banana fiber, used herbal dyes for clothing, and provided employment opportunities to 200 families through training programs," PM Modi shared.
He also recognized Ashish Satyavrat Sahu from Jharkhand, who has elevated tribal weaving and garments to international prominence through the Johargram brand.
"Thanks to his efforts, people around the world have gained awareness of Jharkhand's cultural heritage," the Prime Minister noted.
Additionally, Sweety Kumari from Madhubani district in Bihar has established Sankalp Creations.
"She has transformed Mithila painting into a livelihood opportunity for women. Currently, more than 500 rural women have joined her initiative and are progressing toward self-reliance. These success stories teach us that our traditions contain countless sources of income. With strong determination, success is inevitable," he concluded.
