Gen Z Political Engagement: Chetan Bhagat Discusses Youth's Diminishing Interest in Politics and Its Consequences

Generation Z's political apathy is contributing to their issues being overlooked, according to acclaimed author Chetan Bhagat during an exclusive NDTV interview today. The 51-year-old writer, whose forthcoming book "12 Years, My Messed Up Love Story" features Gen Z characters, shared insights about this demographic.

"Unfortunately I would like them to be more politically engaged," Bhagat remarked. He noted that while a small percentage of Gen Z demonstrates political awareness, approximately 90% remain disinterested in political matters.

"They are more concerned with personal relationships, career prospects, and existential questions rather than civic engagement," he explained. "That's precisely why many of their issues aren't being addressed—they simply don't engage with current affairs. They bypass news sections for entertainment content, which is something they should reconsider."

The term "Gen Z"—referring to individuals in their early and mid-twenties—has gained prominence following recent protests in Nepal that successfully toppled the government. What began as opposition to social media restrictions evolved into an anti-corruption movement.

Bhagat highlighted how this generation's internet dependency has affected their development. Having grown up with constant connectivity, many Gen Z individuals demonstrate reduced stress tolerance and diminished face-to-face communication skills.

"Passive content consumption while physically inactive and mentally unchallenged is detrimental. Gen Z should be mindful of this tendency, as their technological upbringing has potentially made them less resilient," Bhagat cautioned.

However, he balanced his critique with an important observation: "Nevertheless, throughout history, significant global changes and revolutions have consistently been driven by younger generations. We must respect them without judgment and recognize emerging trends they represent."
